Magic of the Cup

The FA cup third round has always been marked on my calendar every year. It's a totally different weekend than any other in the year. You have a feeling of hope when any team can beat any other team. The chance that a team 100 places below another can beat the other, no other sporting competition puts such a gulf in class up against one and other.

I will be making my way to the Kassam Stadium as for first time in a few years my team Oxford United of League 2 take on Sheffield United of league 1 in the third round of the FA cup. While this is not the glamour tie many Oxford or Sheffield fans wanted it does provide a great opportunity for smaller clubs. The winner of today's tie will win just over £67,000 which is a tidy sum for any club. Oxford are expecting one of their best gate sells of the season and the chance to be in the fourth round increasing your chance of getting one of those big teams.

It's a strange thing the cup tie because both Sheffield and Oxford realistically have no chance of winning the cup and both sets of fans know that. Yet the atmosphere at the Kassam will be electric as both clubs will be desperate to win and hopefully get that bigger tie in the fourth round.

The magic of cup is great for clubs as it can help financial, it brings hope to fans you may have been watching their club struggle or year and more important it brings hope that once again David can beat Goliath.

Enjoy the cup people.
